Basingstoke & North Hampshire Hospital Rheumatology Services Transformed with New DEXA Scanner
In an exciting leap forward for local healthcare, Basingstoke & North Hampshire Hospital has just installed a cutting-edge DEXA scanner, funded by the Hampshire Medical Fund. This high-tech addition is set to revolutionise the way we diagnose and treat bone-related conditions, offering improved care for thousands of patients.
The new DEXA scanner brings state-of-the-art technology to our community, using low-dose X-rays to measure bone density, which is crucial for diagnosing conditions like osteoporosis that weaken bones and increase the risk of fractures.
With 500-600 hip fracture patients each year, this equipment could help prevent up to 300 hip fractures annually, saving the hospital up to £2 million in associated costs and reducing bed occupancy by up to 6,000 days. It allows for immediate bone health assessments and timely treatment, particularly benefitting elderly patients and those at risk of falls.
This achievement would not have been possible without the support of the community. The DEXA scanner, costing £68,000, highlights the crucial role of ongoing donations to the Hampshire Medical Fund.
Through the support of local donors, we ensure that our hospitals are equipped with the latest technology, allowing clinicians to provide the highest standard of care to patients. Our mission is to continually improve patient outcomes and support the health and wellbeing of our community.
